Maritime Authority reveals Cargo Vessel Traffic in Ghana not been affected by COVID-19

The Ghana Maritime Authority has revealed there is no noticeable reduction in cargo vessel traffic to the country yet as at now amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to the The Deputy Director, Ship Inspections & Marine Security at GMA, Captain Emmanuel Ankamah, the figures completely show that regardless of the lockdowns across the globe, Cargo ships have continued to call at Ghana’s ports.

Government as part of methods to curb the Coronavirus in Ghana, announced the closure of Ghana’s borders with the exception of Cargo ships.

The Ghana Maritime Authority, which regulates the maritime industry in Ghana, issued guidelines to all port authorities to make sure that while ships come in, no crew imports the deadly coronavirus into the country.

Captain Ankamah, further warned the Tema office of Ghana Maritime Authority to be critically sure staff working were properly attired and briefed on the safety protocols to observe in carrying out their inspections and survey duties.

Measure has also been put in place as the Port Health Authority are mandated to go to the anchorage and screen the crew onboard ships coming to the country for symptoms of the COVID-19 virus.

Though there were a number of false alarms, samples of people at the Ports, tested negative for the COVID-19.

He also prayed the global pandemic gets out soon to prevent any future disruptions.

Mr Alonsi heaped praises on the GPHA for both their efforts and cooperation and assured them of GMA’s support wherever necessary.

He said it was absolutely important that the two bodies remained vigilant in the exercise of their mandate “so that we can continue to keep our people and our country safe.”
