The 46 approved Public Colleges of Education will once again use a quota system of admission, according to the Ghanaian government.
As a result, only a select group of applicants will be allowed to enroll in colleges of education beginning with the 2022–2023 academic year.
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), in a letter to the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) listed the number of permissible admissions for prospective teacher trainees for the 46 colleges of education.
“Please be informed that the allocation cannot be varied and must be strictly adhered to. For the avoidance of doubt, payment of Feeding Grants and Trainee Allowances will be guided by these members,” GTEC said in its letter.
Former President John Mahama’s administration abolished the teacher trainee allowances for colleges of education and replaced them with Student Loan Trust Fund loans.
This action was taken in an effort to lower the financial burden on the government and boost enrollment in the various institutes of education.
By making this choice, the colleges of education decided to stop using the quota system.
However, as part of its electioneering prior to the 2016 elections, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) pledged to reinstate the teacher trainee payments.
In the year 2022, the President Akufo-Addo administration has also reinstated the quota system, which will restrict the number of applicants that colleges would accept.
